Who in Toronto is buying super visa insurance?

Immigrants make up 46.6 percent of Toronto’s population, 1,286,140 people in the 2021 Census, and the three largest birthplaces are the Philippines (10.3 percent of immigrants), China (10.1 percent) and India (7.9 percent) per the City of Toronto census backgrounder. South Asian residents are 12.6 to 14.0 percent of the city, Chinese 10.7 to 11.1 percent and Filipino 6.2 percent.

That makes Toronto the most varied super visa market in Canada. Chinese parents, often in their 70s, raise the stability-period questions; Filipino parents are more often under 65; Indian and Pakistani parents cluster at 60 to 70. Parents apply from abroad and see a panel physician there for the immigration medical, so Toronto clinics are not part of the process.

How does buying work from Toronto?

The purchase is online and takes about ten minutes: enter the parent’s date of birth, planned entry date and health answers, compare live prices, pay annually or by deposit and instalments, and download a certificate naming the underwriter. IRCC wants the certificate, not a quote, uploaded with the application.

Step What you do What you get
1 Enter age, entry date, health answers Live prices from available insurers
2 Choose plan and deductible Policy summary naming the underwriter
3 Pay in full or 2-month deposit plus fee Certificate PDF by email
4 Upload to the IRCC application Proof of insurance on file
5 Forward to your parent Shown to CBSA at Pearson

The IRCC rules require at least $100,000 per applicant covering health care, hospitalisation and repatriation, valid one year from the date of entry, from a Canadian insurer or a foreign insurer on OSFI’s register. Brokers and claims administrators are not insurers. Full details are on our super visa insurance guide.

Which languages does SuperVisaDirect support?

English now. Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu and Tagalog pages are planned, and Chinese-language support is under review given Toronto’s demand. Phone help is available with a family member translating, and every insurer we list runs a multilingual 24-hour assistance line.

What does a Toronto hospital charge an uninsured parent?

Toronto hospitals bill non-residents at their own rates. Toronto East Health Network publishes $3,100 a day for a ward bed, $4,500 a day for intensive care and $1,025 for an emergency visit for out-of-country patients; Unity Health lists a $240 non-resident ambulance charge. Physician fees are billed separately.

Item Toronto East Health Network, out-of-country ($)
Ward bed, per day 3,100
Intensive care, per day 4,500
Emergency visit incl. ER physician 1,025

Ontario has no OHIP waiting period since 2025, but that applies only to residents; a super visa parent is a visitor and never qualifies. A week in intensive care at those rates exceeds $30,000 before specialists, which is why the health questions must be answered exactly; see pre-existing conditions.

What will it cost a Toronto family?

Annual premium, $100,000 coverage, $0 deductible, stable pre-existing covered, rates seen Oct 2026 — verify at quote time.

Parent’s age Lowest of 8 insurers ($/yr) Highest ($/yr)
55 1,577 2,373
65 2,051 4,201
75 4,000 9,910

Questions people ask

Is there an IRCC-approved list of super visa insurers in Toronto?

No. IRCC publishes no approved list. The test is that the insurer is Canadian, or a foreign insurer authorised by OSFI and on OSFI's public register, issuing in the course of its business in Canada. Every plan SuperVisaDirect lists is underwritten by such an insurer, and the certificate names it.

My parents are from the Philippines. Which plan should I look at?

The same rules apply: $100,000 for a year. For a parent in their 60s with stable conditions, Secure Travel, GMS and Destination were the lowest priced in October 2026. Philippine domestic insurers do not qualify. Processing from the Philippines took 90 days in September 2026, so set a start date you can move.

Can I pay for super visa insurance monthly in Toronto?

Yes. IRCC accepts instalments as long as a deposit has been paid. 21st Century takes two months' premium plus $50, Destination two months plus $10, Secure Travel two months plus $120 and Travelance two months plus $60 to $100. Manulife, GMS and Allianz are annual-pay only. A missed instalment lapses the cover.

What does Toronto General or Sunnybrook charge a visitor without insurance?

Each hospital sets its own rate. Toronto East Health Network publishes $3,100 a day for a ward bed, $4,500 for intensive care and $1,025 for an emergency visit for out-of-country patients, before physician fees. Unity Health's page lists only a $240 non-resident ambulance charge. A super visa policy pays the hospital directly where the insurer arranges it.
