Super visa insurance can be paid monthly. IRCC’s rule is that the policy must be “paid in full or in instalments with a deposit,” and that “quotes are not accepted.” In October 2026, four of the 8 insurers we compare offered monthly billing. They are 21st Century, Travelance, Secure Travel and Destination. Each takes two months’ premium up front plus a set-up fee of $10 to $120.
The monthly premium is the annual premium divided by twelve. A 68-year-old paid about $135 a month against $1,621 a year on a no-pre-existing plan. The trade-off is not price; it is the lapse risk if a payment fails.
Does IRCC accept monthly super visa insurance?
Yes. The forms and documents page states the policy must be “paid in full or in instalments with a deposit.” The officer instructions say the officer should be satisfied the applicant has cover “for a full year on each entry (initial and subsequent), regardless of the applicant’s method of payment.”
Two things must be true for an instalment policy to pass. The deposit must have been paid, so that a policy exists rather than a quote. And the certificate must show a term of at least 365 days from the date of entry. The schedule of remaining payments is between you and the insurer.
Which insurers offer monthly payments, and what do they charge?
21st Century takes two months plus $50. Travelance takes two months plus $60 to $100. Secure Travel takes two months plus $120 and then bills 10 instalments. Destination takes two months plus a $10 surcharge. Manulife CoverMe, GMS and Allianz are annual-pay only.

What does the certificate say on a monthly plan?
The certificate shows the insured’s name, the underwriter, the coverage amount, the effective date and an expiry date 365 days later. It shows the total annual premium. It does not say “monthly” and it does not list a payment schedule. From IRCC’s point of view it is the same document as an annual certificate.
Some insurers add a line such as “premium payable in instalments.” That is acceptable. What would not be acceptable is a certificate with a one-month or two-month term, because the rule is one year from the date of entry. Check the expiry date before you upload. See the sample certificate for each field.
What happens on a missed payment?
The policy lapses from the missed date. The parent is uninsured, and the IRCC condition that the policy be valid for a year from entry is no longer met. Reinstatement is possible at most insurers within a grace window if the arrears are paid, but the gap may be excluded and some insurers re-underwrite.
| Situation | What the insurer does | What it means for the super visa |
|---|---|---|
| Card declined, paid within the grace period | Reinstated, usually with no gap | No effect |
| Card declined, not paid | Policy lapses on the due date | Parent uninsured; no valid cover to show on re-entry |
| Reinstated after a lapse | New effective date; gap not covered; medical questions may be re-asked | A new one-year term may be needed |
| Host cancels instalments deliberately | Treated as cancellation; fee applies | Pro-rata refund only if no claims |
The practical fix is simple. Use a card that will not expire during the year, enable auto-pay, and put a second card on file where the insurer allows it. If the parent is hospitalized mid-year, the instalments keep coming due; a claim does not suspend billing.
Is monthly more expensive than annual in total?
Monthly costs the annual premium plus the set-up fee, so $10 to $120 more over the year. The hidden cost is the cancellation fee, which still applies if you stop paying early. Monthly is worth it when cash flow matters or when the parent may leave before the year ends.
| Profile, Oct 2026 rates | Annual, paid once | Monthly, 12 months total | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Age 58, no pre-existing, published example | $1,329 | About $1,332 plus fee ($10 to $120) | Fee only |
| Age 65, Secure Travel, no pre-existing | $1,621 | $1,620 plus $120 | $120 |
| Age 65, Destination, no pre-existing | $2,081 | $2,201 plus $10 | $130 (BestQuote shows a higher monthly base) |
| Age 75, 21st Century Basic | $3,347 | $3,347 plus $50 | $50 |
Where the parent leaves after six months, monthly wins clearly. You have paid six instalments plus the fee and owe a cancellation fee. On an annual plan you have paid the full year and wait for a pro-rata refund, which is paid only if no claims were made. The refunds page has the fee for each insurer.
Which insurers are annual-only, and does that matter?
Manulife CoverMe, GMS and Allianz require the full year’s premium at purchase. For a 65-year-old with stable pre-existing conditions, that is $2,874, $2,405 and $4,201 respectively at October 2026 rates. The insurer’s terms, not the payment plan, should drive the choice.
Annual-only is not a disadvantage for IRCC. It is a cash-flow question. GMS asks no medical questions under 55 and has a $5,000 repatriation cap. Manulife has a 180-day stability period to age 85. Allianz pauses coverage during trips to the home country. Those features matter more than the billing cycle. Questions people ask
Does IRCC accept super visa insurance paid monthly?
Yes. IRCC's forms and documents page says the policy must be paid in full or in instalments with a deposit, and that quotes are not accepted. The officer instructions add that the officer must be satisfied the applicant has a full year of cover on each entry, regardless of the method of payment.
Which super visa insurers offer monthly payments?
21st Century (Manulife), Travelance (Old Republic), Secure Travel (iA Financial Group) and Destination (Zurich, Canadian Branch) offer monthly billing with a two-month deposit. Manulife CoverMe, GMS and Allianz are annual-pay only. TuGo's monthly option was unverified at October 2026.
How much is the deposit on a monthly super visa plan?
Two months' premium plus a set-up fee at every insurer we compared. For a 65-year-old on a no-pre-existing plan in October 2026, that was $351 at 21st Century Basic, $357 at Destination, $390 at Secure Travel and $433 at Travelance Premier.
What happens if I miss a monthly payment?
The policy lapses. The parent is uninsured from the missed date, and IRCC's one-year-from-entry requirement is no longer met. Most insurers allow reinstatement within a short window if the arrears are paid, but a gap can require new medical underwriting. Set the card to auto-pay and keep a second card on file.
Does the certificate say the policy is paid monthly?
The certificate shows the full 365-day term and the total premium. It does not flag the payment schedule as a problem. IRCC and CBSA accept a certificate on an instalment plan as long as the deposit has been paid and the dates cover the full year.
Is monthly more expensive than annual?
Only by the set-up fee, which is $10 to $120. The monthly premium is the annual premium divided by twelve. The real cost of monthly is the lapse risk on a missed payment, and the fact that cancellation fees still apply if you stop early.
