An annual multi-trip plan pays off when the family leaves Canada two or more times in twelve months, as long as every trip fits the per-trip limit. BMO’s guide puts the rule of thumb at more than one trip a year and offers limits of 4, 10 and 23 days; Manulife CoverMe’s multi-trip chart offers 4, 10, 18, 30 or 60 days. A single six-week trip to India or the Philippines exceeds most of those limits and needs a single-trip policy or a top-up bought before departure.
How do annual and single-trip plans differ?
An annual plan covers unlimited trips in twelve months, each capped at a set number of days; a single-trip plan covers one trip for its exact dates. BMO says single-trip cover runs up to 183 days, or 212 in some provinces, while annual plans cost more up front and save money over several trips.
| Feature | Single-trip | Annual multi-trip |
|---|---|---|
| Trips covered | One, fixed dates | Unlimited in 12 months |
| Maximum trip length | Up to 183 days (212 in some provinces) | 4, 10, 15, 18, 23, 30 or 60 days per trip, by carrier |
| Trips within Canada | Per the policy | Often no per-trip limit (Manulife) |
| Questionnaire | By age and carrier | Manulife: from age 60 |
| Emergency medical limit | By carrier | Manulife: $10 million per trip |
| Runs over the limit | Extend before expiry | Top-up before departure, or coverage for that trip can be suspended |

When does the annual plan pay off?
At two trips for most families, and sometimes at one. PolicyAdvisor’s 2026 tables price TuGo’s (iA Financial Group) annual plan with a 15-day limit at $149.50 at age 25, $155.25 at 55, $241.50 at 65 and $501.40 at 75. Its Manulife review, dated July 2026, gives 15-day sample premiums of $188.10 at 55, $256.80 to $652.80 at 65 and $574.20 to $1,455.90 at 75.
| Age | TuGo annual, 15-day limit ($/yr) | Manulife 15-day sample ($) |
|---|---|---|
| 55 | 155.25 | 188.10 |
| 65 | 241.50 | 256.80 to 652.80 |
| 75 | 501.40 | 574.20 to 1,455.90 |
Premiums seen in PolicyAdvisor tables, 2026, illustrative only; different carriers and plan types, so verify at quote time. The arithmetic is simple: price the annual plan with the limit that fits your longest trip, price each single trip, and buy annual if two single trips cost more. Premiums rise steeply from 65, so the comparison changes every year.
Which trip patterns suit which plan?
Match the plan to the longest trip, then count the others.
| Family’s year | Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One 6-week trip to India, nothing else | Single-trip | 42 days exceeds every limit except 60 |
| Two 3-week trips to the Philippines | Annual, 23 or 30-day limit | Both trips fit; two single-trips would cost more |
| 4-week trip to Pakistan plus weekend trips to Buffalo | Annual, 30-day limit | US day trips are trips too; each needs cover |
| 8-week trip home plus a Florida week | Annual, 60-day limit, or annual plus top-up | Only Manulife’s 60-day option fits without a top-up |
| PR parent, 5 months in Gujarat | Single-trip, long duration | Exceeds all annual limits; watch OHIP’s 153-day rule |

How do top-ups work?
A top-up starts the day after the existing cover ends and must be in place before the gap. TuGo’s guide says a top-up covers you the day after another policy expires, that a TuGo extension is available only while the policy has not lapsed and no claim is pending, and that another carrier may void or restrict coverage if you do not top up with them directly. It warns against covering only part of a trip.
TuGo’s top-up day limits run to 365 days for ages 59 and under and 182 or 212 days from 60, depending on the home province. Stability requirements for pre-existing conditions are assessed on the total trip length including the top-up days, so a 30-day annual limit plus a 20-day top-up is a 50-day trip for questionnaire purposes.
What about pre-existing conditions on an annual plan?
Covered if stable for the carrier’s period, which rises with age and sometimes with trip length. Manulife’s product summary sets 3 months for rate category A (59 and under) and 6 months for categories B and C (59 and over), with a questionnaire from age 60.
| Carrier (underwriter) | Under 60 | 60 to 74 | 75 and over |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manulife CoverMe (Manufacturers Life) | 3 months | 6 months | 6 months |
| TuGo (iA Financial Group) | 7 days for trips of 35 days or less; 90 days for longer trips | 180 days | 365 days |
Source: Manulife, PolicyAdvisor. An annual plan’s stability is tested at each departure, not once at purchase, so a medication change in March affects a trip in April. Parents over 70 should read over-70 travellers.
Does an annual plan change the OHIP absence rules?
No. The policy covers trips; it does not keep provincial coverage alive. Ontario requires physical presence in Ontario for 153 days in any 12-month period, and an absence of more than 212 days may mean reapplying at a ServiceOntario centre. A family of frequent travellers should count the days; see parents who are now permanent residents and what provincial plans pay abroad.

Questions people ask
How many trips a year make an annual plan cheaper than single-trip policies?
Usually two. BMO's guide says an annual plan is more cost-effective if you travel more than once a year. In PolicyAdvisor's 2026 tables, TuGo's annual plan with a 15-day limit cost $155.25 at age 55 and $241.50 at 65, which is in the range of one single-trip policy at other carriers. Compare both at quote time for your ages and dates.
What are the per-trip day limits on annual plans?
They vary by carrier: BMO offers 4, 10 and 23 days; Manulife CoverMe's multi-trip Emergency Medical plan offers 4, 10, 18, 30 or 60 days; PolicyAdvisor's TuGo table uses 15 days. Within Canada there is often no per-trip limit. Pick the limit that fits your longest trip, not your average one.
What happens if a trip runs past the limit?
Coverage for that trip can be suspended, and emergencies after the limit expires may not be covered, per BMO. TuGo says a top-up must start the day after the existing coverage ends and warns against covering only part of a trip. Buy the top-up before you leave, not when the return flight is moved.
Does a six-week trip to Punjab fit an annual plan?
Only with a 60-day limit or a top-up. A 42-day trip exceeds the 4, 10, 15, 18, 23 and 30-day options. If the family makes one long trip home and no other travel, buy single-trip. If it also drives to Buffalo or flies to Florida, buy annual with the longest limit and add a top-up for the long trip.
Do annual plans cover pre-existing conditions?
Yes, with a stability period that rises with age. Manulife CoverMe requires 3 months for applicants 59 and under and 6 months from 59 and over, with a questionnaire from age 60. TuGo requires 7 days under 60 for trips of 35 days or less, 90 days for longer trips, 180 days from 60 to 74 and 365 days from 75. Verify at quote time.
Can I be away from Ontario for a whole year on an annual plan?
The plan covers unlimited trips, but OHIP requires you to be physically in Ontario for 153 days in any 12-month period, and an absence over 212 days may mean reapplying at ServiceOntario. A long absence can cost the provincial coverage that the travel policy sits on top of; see the PR parents page.
