Which super visa insurance is best? Every insurer compared (2026)

The plan sold on SuperVisaDirect is TuGo's Visitors to Canada plan (iA Financial Group); this page shows how it sits against the other 7 Canadian super visa insurers. On 17 October 2026, Secure Travel was the lowest of the 8 at ages 55 to 75 with pre-existing cover, GMS asked no medical questions under 55, TuGo had no maximum age and a 7-day rider, and Manulife and 21st Century had the clearest refund on refusal.

The plan sold on SuperVisaDirect is TuGo’s Visitors to Canada Emergency Medical plan, underwritten by iA Financial Group. This page shows how it sits against the rest of the Canadian market, so you can check our one plan against the other seven before you buy. On 17 October 2026 we compared 8 insurers on 10 terms. Secure Travel (iA Financial Group) was the lowest-priced of the 8 for a parent aged 55 to 75 with stable pre-existing conditions; TuGo was sixth of 8 at 55, fifth at 65 and third at 75. TuGo was the only plan with no maximum age and the only one with a 7-day unstable-condition rider. GMS was the only plan asking no medical questions under 55. Manulife and 21st Century had the simplest refund on refusal.

Every plan below meets IRCC’s rule: $100,000 of emergency coverage per applicant, health care, hospitalization and repatriation, valid one year from the date of entry, from a Canadian insurer. The differences are in what happens at claim time, at the border and at cancellation. This is a dated comparison; the ranking changes at each age band. Only the TuGo row can be bought on SuperVisaDirect; the other seven are shown for comparison and are sold by the insurers themselves or by other agencies.

How do the 8 super visa insurers compare on every term?

The table compares underwriter, maximum age, stability period by age, monthly billing and fee, refund on refusal, cancellation fee, repatriation limit, whether the plan is sold on SuperVisaDirect, and price at 55, 65 and 75. Read across a row for one insurer, or down a column for one term.

Prices are from the BestQuote and PolicyAdvisor tables. Where a cell says “per policy terms,” the published summaries did not state a figure; the policy wording governs. SuperVisaDirect sells the TuGo plan to Ontario residents today; the other seven plans are shown for comparison and are sold by the insurers themselves or through other agencies.

What does the price table look like without pre-existing cover?

Three plans exclude pre-existing conditions outright and cost 30 to 45 per cent less. Secure Travel’s no-pre-existing option was $1,026 at 55, $1,621 at 65 and $2,920 at 75. 21st Century Basic was $1,387, $1,807 and $3,347. MSH Discover Canada Essential was $1,307, $1,413 and $2,712.

Secure Travel, no pre-existing iA Financial Group $1,026 $1,621 $2,920
MSH Discover Canada Essential Claims administrator; underwriter must be named on the certificate $1,307 $1,413 $2,712
21st Century Basic Manulife $1,387 $1,807 $3,347

These plans are appropriate only for a parent with no diagnoses and no regular medication. A no-questionnaire plan does not mean no underwriting; it means underwriting happens at claim time, from the medical records. See pre-existing conditions.

Which plan fits a parent under 60 in good health?

A healthy parent under 60 can take any of the 8. On October 2026 rates, Secure Travel at $1,577 with pre-existing cover, or $1,026 without, was the lowest of the 8 we compared. GMS at $1,602 asks no medical questions under 55, which removes the misrepresentation risk entirely for a 54-year-old.

The decision is whether to pay for pre-existing cover at all. If the parent takes any daily medication, pay for it: the stability period under 60 is only 90 days at Secure Travel, Destination, TuGo and Allianz. If the parent takes nothing and has no diagnosis, the no-pre-existing plan saves about $550 a year at Secure Travel.

Which plan fits a parent aged 60 to 69 with controlled conditions?

This is the largest group: 41 per cent of super visa applicants are 56 to 64 and 24 per cent are 65 to 74. For a 65-year-old with controlled hypertension or type 2 diabetes, Secure Travel at $2,051 was lowest of the 8 we compared, with a 90-day stability period to age 69. Manulife at $2,874 and TuGo at $2,986 were next, with 180 and 120 days.

The stability period is the key term. Secure Travel asks for 90 days of stability to age 69. Destination asks for 120 days from 60 to 69, TuGo 120 days, and Manulife, GMS, 21st Century Enhanced and Allianz 180 days. If the parent’s doctor changed a dose four months ago, Secure Travel and Destination cover the condition and Manulife does not. See the diabetes and hypertension pages.

Which plan fits a parent aged 70 to 79?

At 70 the price roughly doubles from 65 at most insurers, and every stability period becomes 180 days. On October 2026 rates, Secure Travel at $3,380 was lowest of the 8 at 70, with TuGo at $3,985, Destination at $4,179 and Manulife at $4,181 close together. At 75, Secure Travel was $4,000 and Allianz $9,910.

Two terms matter more here. GMS caps repatriation at $5,000, and a medical repatriation to India or the Philippines can cost more than that. GMS also stops issuing at 79, so a renewal at 80 means switching. TuGo’s optional 7-day unstable-condition rider is available to age 79, which is the only way to insure a condition that changed last month. See heart conditions.

Which plan fits a parent aged 80 or older?

Only 6 per cent of applicants are over 75, and the options narrow. GMS does not issue at 80. Destination issues but excludes all pre-existing conditions from 80. Manulife, Travelance and 21st Century Enhanced issue to 85, Allianz to 89, Secure Travel to 90, and TuGo and 21st Century Basic have no maximum.

Age Plans that issue Plans with pre-existing cover Stability period
80 to 84 All except GMS Secure Travel, TuGo, Manulife, Travelance, 21st Century Enhanced, Allianz 180 days
85 All except GMS Secure Travel (to 84 for pre-existing), TuGo, Manulife, Allianz 180 days
86 to 89 Secure Travel, TuGo, Allianz, 21st Century Basic, Destination (no pre-existing) TuGo, Allianz 365 days at TuGo; 180 at Allianz
90 and over TuGo, 21st Century Basic TuGo 365 days

The $96,311 Hamilton bill involved an 88-year-old on a no-questionnaire plan. At this age, a full medical questionnaire answered with the doctor’s file in hand is protection, not a hurdle. See dementia for cognitive conditions, which several insurers treat separately.

Which plan fits a family paying monthly on a budget?

Four insurers bill monthly: 21st Century, Travelance, Secure Travel and Destination. For a 65-year-old with no pre-existing conditions in October 2026, the lowest monthly premium of the four was Secure Travel at $135, but its $120 set-up fee was the highest. Destination’s fee was $10 at $183 a month.

Plan (underwriter) Age 65 monthly Set-up fee First-year total
Secure Travel (iA Financial Group) $135 $120 About $1,740
21st Century Basic (Manulife) $151 $50 About $1,857
Travelance Premier (Old Republic) $166 $100 About $2,097
Destination (Zurich, Canadian Branch) $183 $10 About $2,211

Where does the TuGo plan sold on SuperVisaDirect sit?

Treat the tables above as a dated snapshot of 8 insurers, not a ranking. The “lowest” label means the lowest of the 8 we compared on 17 October 2026 for that profile. The underwriter, stability period, repatriation limit and refund terms are stable; prices move at renewal and at each age band.

On price, TuGo was not the lowest at any age we checked. At 55 it was $2,093 against Secure Travel’s $1,577, a gap of $516; at 65 it was $2,986 against $2,051, a gap of $935; at 70 it was $3,985 against $3,380; at 75 it was $5,295 against $4,000. At 55 and 65 five insurers were cheaper; at 75 two were.

What the difference buys is three terms the lower-priced plans do not have together. There is no maximum age, so a parent of 86 or 90 is insured on the same plan with a 365-day stability period, where GMS stops at 79, Manulife at 85 and Secure Travel’s pre-existing cover at 84. The optional 7-day unstable-condition rider, to age 79, is the only way in this table to cover a condition whose medication changed last month without waiting out 90 to 180 days. And the policy issues instantly, so the certificate IRCC needs is in your inbox minutes after payment at any hour. Against that, TuGo’s stability period at 60 to 69 is 120 days where Secure Travel’s is 90, it has no verified monthly plan, and its cancellation fee after the start date is $250.

If the parent is under 70, in stable health and the family is choosing on price alone, Secure Travel, GMS or Destination cost less in October 2026 and are bought from those insurers or through other agencies; the switching page explains how to move between plans without a gap. If the parent is older, has a condition that changed recently, or the family wants the certificate today, the TuGo plan is the one we sell and the reason we sell it.

The THIA Bill of Rights, which member insurers follow, gives a 10-day free look and a right to appeal a claim decision; check the policy wording for the insurer you choose.
