Super visa and visitor visa holders generally cannot. Most insurers want the permit valid at least three months past the application date.

Newcomers in Canada under 12 months who apply for larger amounts usually need a paramedical exam and hepatitis B and C bloodwork, according to the PolicyAdvisor guide. After two years, most insurers treat the file like a Canadian citizen’s.

Who else offers no-medical or simplified-issue term?

Three insurers sell term life with health questions instead of a medical exam, and all three accept work permit holders in some form: Canada Protection Plan (underwritten by Foresters), Humania and Assumption Life. Limits range from $250,000 to $1 million. These plans suit newcomers who want cover in days, not weeks, or who have a health history.

Insurer Product Max coverage Permit holders Key condition
Canada Protection Plan (Foresters) Simplified-issue and no-medical term Up to $1,000,000 (Preferred); work permit holders up to $250,000 life and $100,000 CI Yes: citizen, PR or valid work or study permit Coverage can start in 24 hours
Humania IWME Life (Insurance Without Medical Exam) $1,000,000 Gold (over $500,000 for age 50 and under); $500,000 Silver; $300,000 Bronze Residency minimum reduced to two years, Jan 2026 Six online questions, issued instantly
Assumption Life Platinum Protection Term; Golden Protection Term $750,000; $250,000 Yes: up to $750,000 life for work permit holders Permit valid one year or more and not expiring within three months

Canada Protection Plan’s simplified-issue page requires applicants to be “a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have a valid work or study permit.” Protect Your Wealth reports the work permit cap at $250,000 life and $100,000 critical illness.

Humania’s IWME Life page lists “only 6 eligibility questions” and instant issue for Simplified Issue, ages 18 to 70 for T10 and T20. Its January 2026 notice cut the minimum residency period to two years and dropped the government-benefit eligibility test.

Assumption Life’s term page shows Platinum Protection Term at $25,000 to $750,000 and Golden Protection Term at $25,000 to $250,000, both with no medical exam and no blood tests. Protect Your Wealth reports Assumption Life accepts work permit holders up to $750,000 and provincial nominees up to $1 million, but excludes super visa, visitor visa and asylum claimants.

Why should a super visa host hold term life?

Because the host has signed an undertaking to support the parent for the full stay, up to five years per entry. If the host dies, the parent still needs housing, food, medication and the next year’s visitor insurance premium. A term policy sized to those obligations keeps the undertaking funded.

Work through the numbers:

  • Parent’s living costs for the remaining stay: rent share, food, transport.
  • Visitor insurance renewals: $1,600 to $5,500 a year depending on age, per our cost page.
  • Return flights and settlement costs if the parent must go home.
  • The host’s own mortgage, children and debts, which usually dominate.

A 35-year-old host in good health can typically insure $500,000 for 20 years for less than the annual super visa premium of a 70-year-old parent. Ask an advisor to quote both together.

How does an e-application work?

An advisor completes the insurer’s electronic application with you by phone or video, you sign electronically, and the insurer schedules a tele-interview or issues immediately, depending on the product. No paper, no courier and, for simplified-issue plans, no exam. Documents needed: permit, proof of address and, for higher amounts, a job letter or pay stub.

Step Fully underwritten (e.g. Wawanesa Life) Simplified issue (e.g. Humania IWME)
1. Needs call 20 minutes with a licensed advisor 20 minutes with a licensed advisor
2. Application Advisor completes it electronically; you e-sign Six eligibility questions online; you e-sign
3. Underwriting Tele-interview in your language; bloodwork if under a year in Canada and amount is large None beyond the questions
4. Decision Days to a few weeks Instant
5. Policy delivery By email through the insurer’s portal By email, same day

Bring the permit and a Canadian address. For amounts over $1 million, or if a PR application has been filed, have the acknowledgement of receipt handy; some insurers raise limits with it, as the PolicyAdvisor guide notes.

What should you watch for?

Four things cause declined applications or denied claims for newcomers: a permit expiring within three months, undisclosed health history, applying for more than the status allows, and foreign travel plans that trigger a residency questionnaire. An advisor checks all four before submitting. Nothing on this page is advice for your situation until you have spoken to a licensed advisor.

Super Visa Direct Insurance Services arranges life insurance alongside visitor and super visa insurance. Contact a licensed advisor with your permit type, age and the amount you have in mind. For critical illness options, see critical illness insurance for new Canadians.

Questions people ask

Can I get life insurance on a work permit in Canada?

Yes. Most Canadian life insurers accept work permit holders, usually requiring the permit to be valid for at least three months past the application date. Coverage can start from the first day in Canada on a valid permit. Limits depend on the permit type, occupation and whether a permanent residence application has been filed.

Do I need a medical exam?

Not always. Simplified-issue plans from Canada Protection Plan, Humania and Assumption Life ask health questions instead of an exam, with limits from $250,000 to $1 million. Fully underwritten plans, including Wawanesa Life's Foreign Nationals program, use a tele-interview and may order bloodwork for newcomers in Canada under a year.

What is the Wawanesa Life Foreign Nationals program?

An underwriting program for foreign-trained skilled professionals on work or study permits, refugees and temporary-visa spouses of citizens or permanent residents. It offers life insurance up to $2 million and critical illness up to $100,000, with a tele-interview available in the client's language. Super Visa Direct Insurance Services arranges it through a managing general agency.

Why should a super visa host hold term life insurance?

Because the host signed an undertaking to support the parent for the length of the stay. If the host dies, the parent's housing, food and renewal premiums still need paying. A 10- or 20-year term policy sized to those obligations costs less than most super visa premiums and protects both generations.

How does an e-application work?

The advisor completes the insurer's electronic application with you by phone or video, you sign electronically, and the insurer schedules a tele-interview if needed. Wawanesa Life uses the @pprove platform for electronic submission. Simplified-issue plans from Humania are issued instantly online after six eligibility questions.

Can a super visa holder buy life insurance in Canada?

Generally no. Assumption Life excludes super visa and visitor visa holders, and most insurers require a work or study permit, permanent residence or citizenship. A parent on a super visa should hold visitor medical insurance instead. Term life is for the host, who sponsors the visit and carries the financial obligation.
