Get the parent to hospital first. Then, within 24 hours of admission and before any surgery, call the insurer’s 24-hour assistance line with the policy number. The assistance company opens a file, confirms cover to the hospital and arranges direct billing. Skipping that call costs 20 percent of the bill at most insurers and reduces GMS benefits to 70 percent or $50,000. Keep every receipt for anything paid on the day.
This is the first-hour version of the claims hub. Insurer-specific steps follow the links in the table below.
What do you need to hand?
The policy number and the assistance number, both on the certificate and wallet card; the parent’s passport; and the name of the hospital and attending doctor once known. Nothing else is needed for the first call.
| Item | Where it is |
|---|---|
| Policy number | Confirmation email, certificate, wallet card; see sample certificate |
| 24-hour assistance number | Certificate and wallet card; the table below |
| Parent’s passport | Needed by the hospital for registration and by the insurer for the entry date |
| Hospital name, ward, attending physician | Ask triage; the insurer will contact the billing office |
| Host’s phone number | For the insurer’s callback |
| Parent’s medication list | Give it to the treating doctor; the insurer will ask later |
Store the first two in the host’s phone the day the policy is bought, under a name findable at 2 a.m.
What are the steps in the first hour?
Seven actions, in order. The first is medical; the rest protect the claim.
- Call 911 or go to the emergency department. Do not delay care to find the certificate. Every policy permits treatment first in a serious emergency.
- Within 24 hours of admission, and before any surgery, call the assistance line. The caller can be the host, a relative or hospital staff; it does not have to be the parent.
- Give the policy number, the parent’s name and date of birth, the hospital, the diagnosis so far and a callback number. Write down the file number, the agent’s name and the time of the call.
- Ask the assistance company to confirm cover to the hospital’s billing or patient-accounts office and to arrange direct billing. Give the hospital the file number.
- If the hospital asks for a credit card before cover is confirmed, ask billing to call the file number first. If you must pay, get an itemized receipt. See direct billing.
- Tell the treating doctor the parent is a visitor with private insurance and hand over the medication list. The insurer will want the admitting diagnosis in writing.
- Keep every piece of paper: ambulance invoice, pharmacy receipts, parking, the discharge summary. Photograph each one the same day.
Source wording on the call requirement: Manulife (“call within 24 hours of hospitalization”), Allianz (“within 24 hours of admission, and before any surgery”) and GMS (“contact GMS Travel Assistance immediately”).
Which number do you call?
The emergency assistance number for the plan, not the brand’s sales office. Six of the eight insurers publish their lines; Secure Travel and Destination print the MSH and Zurich Travel Assist numbers on the certificate.

What does a late call cost?
At most insurers, 20 percent of eligible expenses. At GMS, benefits fall to 70 percent or $50,000, whichever is less. On a three-week ICU stay billed at Ottawa non-resident rates, 20 percent is more than $60,000.
| Plan | Penalty for not calling (without medical reason) |
|---|---|
| Manulife CoverMe | Pay 20% of eligible expenses |
| 21st Century | 20% co-insurance |
| Secure Travel (MSH) | 20% of eligible expenses |
| Allianz | Insurer pays 80% only |
| Travelance | 20% of eligible expenses |
| GMS | Benefits reduced to 70% or $50,000 |
| TuGo | Not stated on public pages; policy wording governs |
| Destination | Not stated in published summary; confirm with the insurer |

What does the hospital charge if nothing is in place?
Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa bills non-residents $1,242 per emergency visit, $4,005 per ward day and $15,642 per ICU day from 1 April 2026, with physician fees extra, and requires a credit card at registration. Those figures are why the assistance call matters more than any other step.
| Service | Non-resident rate, Queensway Carleton, from 1 Apr 2026 |
|---|---|
| Emergency visit | $1,242 |
| Ward, regular acute care, per day | $4,005 |
| Ward, intensive care, per day | $15,642 |
| CT scan | $2,739 |
| Ambulance, per trip | $240 |
| Physician fees | “As billed by the Physician and are in addition to Hospital fees” |

What if something goes wrong?
The usual failures in the first hour are a wrong number, a missed call, and a hospital that will not wait for the insurer.
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| Sales line voicemail at night | Find the emergency number on the certificate; every plan has a 24/7 line |
| Nobody called within 24 hours | Call now; give the medical reason in writing; ask for the penalty to be waived |
| Hospital will not wait for confirmation | Pay against an itemized receipt; tell the assistance company; claim it back |
| Parent needs transport home | Get the insurer’s written pre-approval first; caps range from $3,000 to the sum insured; see repatriation explained |
| Discharged with prescriptions and a follow-up | Ask the assistance company what is approved before paying; see follow-up care and prescriptions |
After the emergency, SuperVisaDirect helps with the claim file and any appeal. Email [email protected] or request a callback, Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 6:00pm Eastern Time. The THIA Bill of Rights sets “prompt and timely communication when a claim situation arises” as your responsibility, and 24/7 assistance as the insurer’s.
Questions people ask
Should I call 911 or the insurer first?
911. Every policy allows treatment first in a life-threatening emergency, with the call to the assistance line within 24 hours of admission and before any surgery where possible. Once the parent is in care, the host or anyone else can make the call. The insurer needs the policy number, hospital name and diagnosis, not the parent on the phone.
What is the 24-hour rule?
Most super visa policies require the insured, or someone on their behalf, to contact the assistance line before treatment or within 24 hours of a hospital admission. Late notice without a medical reason reduces the benefit: 20 percent at Manulife, 21st Century, Secure Travel (MSH), Allianz and Travelance, and a reduction to 70 percent or $50,000 at GMS.
Which number do I call?
The emergency assistance number on the certificate and wallet card, not the sales line. TuGo +1-800-663-0399; Manulife CoverMe 1-877-878-0142; 21st Century 1-877-882-2957; GMS 1-800-459-6604; Allianz 1-844-310-1578; Travelance 1-888-526-0111; Secure Travel and Destination use the MSH or Zurich Travel Assist number printed on their certificates.
What if the hospital asks for a credit card?
Ask the billing office to call the insurer's file number, because the assistance company gives a guarantee of payment once cover is confirmed. Some Ontario hospitals, such as Queensway Carleton in Ottawa, require a credit card from non-residents at registration regardless. If you must pay, get an itemized receipt and claim it back.
Does the parent need to be insured for an ambulance?
Ambulance charges are billed to non-residents whether or not they are insured; Queensway Carleton lists $240 per trip. A super visa policy covers ambulance as emergency transport, so keep the invoice and submit it with the claim. Do not delay an ambulance over cost; the uninsured day rate in ICU is $15,642 at the same hospital.
Can SuperVisaDirect help during an emergency?
Not with the emergency itself; the assistance line is the only number that opens a claim and confirms cover. SuperVisaDirect works by email and callback, Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 6:00pm Eastern Time, and can help afterwards with the claim file, documents and any appeal. Save the assistance number before the parent lands.
