How much does life insurance cost by age for a newcomer to Canada?

A healthy non-smoking man pays about $30 a month for $500,000 of 20-year term at age 30, $45 at 40, $124 at 50 and $403 at 60, per PolicyAdvisor's sample table; women pay roughly 25 to 30 per cent less. Newcomers pay the same rates as citizens. Age at purchase sets the premium for the whole term.

A healthy non-smoking man pays about $30 a month for $500,000 of 20-year term at age 30, $45 at 40, $124 at 50 and $403 at 60, according to the sample table in PolicyAdvisor’s newcomer guide. Women pay roughly 25 to 30 per cent less at each age. The guide states that “newcomers pay the same rates as Canadian citizens”. Age at purchase fixes the premium for the whole term, so the year you buy matters more than the insurer you pick.

What does term life cost at each age?

Roughly a dollar a day in your thirties, four dollars a day at 50, and thirteen at 60, for $500,000 over 20 years. The table below is the public sample we cite; your quote depends on sex, health, smoking status, amount and term, and on which insurers accept your status.

Monthly premium, $500,000 coverage, 20-year term, non-smoker, regular health, rates seen Oct 2026 on PolicyAdvisor — verify at quote time:

Age Male Female
20 $29 $20
30 $30 $22
40 $45 $34
50 $124 $83
60 $403 $281

Two things stand out. The price barely moves between 20 and 30, so there is no reason to wait for PR if you qualify now. And the price nearly triples between 40 and 50, then more than triples again by 60, because a 20-year term from 60 runs to 80.

Why does age matter more than anything else?

Because the premium is set once, at purchase, and held level for the term. A 35-year-old who buys a 20-year term pays the age-35 rate until 55. The same person buying at 45 pays the age-45 rate until 65, and the age-45 rate is already more than double. Insurers price on the probability of death over the term, which rises faster after 50.

How insurers measure age varies. Wawanesa Life’s term page says pricing is based on current age with no rounding up if you are “within 6 months of your next birthday”. Insurers that use age nearest birthday move you into the next band six months early. If a birthday is close, ask the advisor which rule each quoted insurer uses.

What else moves the price?

Sex, smoking, health class, amount, term length and the type of underwriting. Status changes eligibility and maximums, and at a few insurers adds a rating.

Factor Effect Source
Sex Women pay roughly 25 to 30% less in the sample table PolicyAdvisor
Smoking or vaping 50 to 100% higher; any nicotine in the last 12 months counts PolicyAdvisor vapers guide
Term length 10-year starts lower than 20-year but renews at age-based rates Wawanesa Life renews every 10 years after the initial term to 85
Amount Price per $1,000 falls at higher bands at many insurers Confirm at quote time
Underwriting type Simplified-issue, no-exam plans usually cost more per $1,000 than fully underwritten PolicyAdvisor vapers guide notes no-medical policies “typically cost more”
Status rating Manulife applies a 250% rating to PGWP and other temporary visa holders, per Protect Your Wealth Protect Your Wealth

A rating of 250% means two and a half times the standard premium. Not every insurer rates by status; Wawanesa Life’s Foreign Nationals program and the simplified-issue insurers we arrange quote standard rates for eligible permit holders. Comparing across insurers is where the money is; see how to compare quotes.

Does a 10-year term save money?

Only if you need cover for less than 10 years. Starting premiums are lower, but renewal after year 10 is priced at your age then. A 35-year-old who takes 10-year term renews at 45 at more than double the rate, per the table above, and again at 55. For a mortgage or children, 20 or 25 years usually costs less in total.

There is a case for 10-year term: a work permit holder who expects PR within a few years and plans to re-shop with full status. Wawanesa Life’s term plans convert to permanent cover up to age 71, and Canada Protection Plan’s level term, underwritten by Foresters Life Insurance Company, converts until age 70 per its no-medical page. Conversion rights keep that option open without new health questions.

What does no-medical cover cost compared with full underwriting?

More per $1,000, in exchange for speed and fewer questions. The insurer takes on applicants it has not examined, so it prices for that. For a healthy 30-year-old, the gap between a six-question simplified-issue policy and a fully underwritten one can be meaningful over 20 years. For someone with a health history, or under a year in Canada, the simplified-issue price can be the only price.

We do not publish simplified-issue rate grids because insurers change them without notice. An advisor quotes Canada Protection Plan, Humania and Assumption Life live alongside a fully underwritten quote. See no-medical life insurance for how the products differ.

When is the right time to buy?

As soon as you qualify. The sample table shows the price at 30 is almost the same as at 20, and the price at 40 only 50 per cent higher. Waiting for PR, a raise or a settled address costs a year of age each time. A work permit valid at least three months past the application date is enough at most insurers; see eligibility for work permit holders.

Questions people ask

Do newcomers pay more for life insurance?

No. PolicyAdvisor's newcomer guide states that 'newcomers pay the same rates as Canadian citizens.' Status affects which insurers accept you and the maximum amount, not the price per $1,000 of cover. Some insurers apply a rating to certain permit types; Manulife, per Protect Your Wealth, lists a 250% rating for PGWP and other temporary visas.

Why does the price jump so much after 50?

Because mortality rises steeply with age and a 20-year term from 50 runs to 70. In the sample table, $500,000 of 20-year term goes from $45 a month at 40 to $124 at 50 and $403 at 60 for a man. The same policy bought at 40 stays at $45 until 60.

Is a 10-year term cheaper than 20?

At the start, yes, but it renews at age-based rates after 10 years. A 20-year term locks the premium for twice as long. For a newcomer under 45 with a mortgage or children, 20 years usually costs less in total. Compare the renewal schedule, not just the first premium.

Does the exact birthday matter?

At some insurers. Wawanesa Life prices on your current age with no rounding up if you are within six months of your next birthday. Other insurers use 'age nearest birthday', which can move you up a year six months early. Applying before a birthday can save a year's price band.

How much does smoking add?

PolicyAdvisor reports smoker premiums 50 to 100 per cent higher than non-smoker, and vapers are rated as smokers at most insurers. Any nicotine use in the last 12 months counts. See our smokers and vapers page for the rules on switching to non-smoker rates.

Will the insurer quote me a lower rate if I am very healthy?

Possibly, on fully underwritten plans with preferred classes, where low cholesterol, blood pressure and BMI earn a better rate. Simplified-issue plans from Canada Protection Plan, Humania and Assumption Life have fewer classes and often cost more per $1,000 than fully underwritten cover. Ask for both quotes.
