Move the effective date before it arrives. Every insurer we compare allows a date change at no charge if asked before the policy starts, and families routinely move it two or three times. Immigration.ca recorded September 2026 processing of 44 days for Nigeria, 70 for India, 77 for China, 90 for the Philippines, 92 for Pakistan, 97 for the UK, 116 for the US and 265 for Iran. India was 208 days in March 2026.
The policy exists before the decision because IRCC’s officer instructions require it to be “paid in full or in installments with a deposit (quotes are not accepted).” The effective date on it is a forecast. Insurers know this and built the date-change provision for it.
How long is processing in 2026?
Between six weeks and nine months depending on the country, against a service standard of 112 days. The spread within a single country over six months is as large as the spread between countries. Plan for the slow case and move the date when the fast case happens.
| Country | Sep 2026 processing (days) | Earlier 2026 reference |
|---|---|---|
| Nigeria | 44 | — |
| India | 70 | 208 in Mar 2026 |

Processing starts when the complete application is received, and the apply page says to book biometrics “as soon as you can” after the instruction letter to avoid delay. The India page tracks the largest source country.
How should you set the first effective date?
Four to six months after the submission date, adjusted for the country figure and the parent’s own travel plans. A date that is too early forces a move; a date that is too late risks the parent landing before the policy starts. Err late, because moving earlier is just as easy as moving later.
| Country figure | Suggested first effective date |
|---|---|
| Under 60 days | Submission date plus 3 months |
| 60 to 120 days | Submission date plus 4 to 5 months |
| Over 120 days | Submission date plus 6 months, or the country figure plus 6 weeks |
| Any country, parent has a fixed event to attend | The event date minus 2 weeks, then move as needed |
After approval, the after you apply page says the applicant receives a letter to submit the passport to a visa application centre for the visa to be printed. Add two to four weeks for that step and the flight. The effective date should be the day the flight lands in Canada.
What is the step-by-step when processing runs long?
Diarize the effective date, check the IRCC account weekly, and move the date seven days before it arrives if the visa is not yet issued. Repeat as needed. The date change page has the exact steps.
- Note the effective date and set a reminder 14 days before it.
- At the reminder, check the IRCC account. If the passport request letter has arrived, keep the date or move it to the flight date. If not, go to step 3.
- Email the insurer or SuperVisaDirect with the policy number and a new date 2 to 3 months out. “Visa still in process” is reason enough.
- Re-check the parent’s medication list. Tell the insurer of any change since purchase; the stability period now runs from the new date.
- Download the revised certificate. If the IRCC application has not been submitted, replace the upload. If it has, keep the revised certificate for the border.
- Repeat from step 1.
What if the effective date has already passed?
Call the insurer the same day. The published terms generally require the change before the effective date, so after it you are asking for discretion. GMS’s policy wording gives full refunds before the effective date “if no travel has taken place” and partial refunds with an administration fee after it.
| Days since effective date | Likely outcome |
|---|---|
| 1 to 7 | Many insurers re-date with proof of no travel; ask |
| 8 to 30 | Re-dating at some; pro-rata refund less fee at others |
| Over 30 | Pro-rata refund less fee; buy a new policy with the correct date |
| Parent has arrived, policy started earlier | Unused days are not refunded; policy runs to its expiry |
Proof of no travel is the passport with no Canadian entry stamp or the IRCC account showing the application still in process. Keep the request in writing.
Annual or monthly while you wait?
Monthly plans put less cash at risk during the wait. Annual plans cost less overall and refund in full on a refusal at most insurers. Neither is wrong if the date is moved before it arrives; the monthly vs annual page works the totals.
| Payment type | Cash out before the policy starts | If refused | If delayed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annual | Full premium, for example $2,051 at Secure Travel age 65 (Oct 2026 rate) | Full refund, or less an administration fee | Move the date; no cost |
| Monthly | Deposit of about 2 months plus a $10 to $120 set-up fee | Deposit refunded, set-up fee kept | Move the date; instalments do not begin until the policy starts, confirm at quote time |
The requirements page lists everything else that can delay a file, including the medical exam and biometrics. The refunds page covers the outcome if the delay ends in a refusal.
Questions people ask
What are the current super visa processing times?
IRCC's service standard is 112 days. Immigration.ca's September 2026 figures were India 70 days, China 77, Philippines 90, Pakistan 92, Nigeria 44, UK 97, US 116 and Iran 265. India was 208 days in March 2026, which shows how much a single country can move within six months.
Why can't I just buy the insurance after the visa is approved?
Because IRCC requires proof of a paid policy, or one paid by instalments with a deposit, in the application. Quotes are not accepted. The policy therefore exists before the decision, and the effective date is a best guess that the insurer lets you correct.
Is there a charge to move the start date?
Not at the insurers we compare, if the request is made before the current effective date. The premium is recalculated only if the parent crosses an age band before the new date or the insurer's rates changed. Confirm the clause at quote time, because wordings can change.
What if the effective date passes while the visa is still in process?
Contact the insurer at once. Some will re-date the policy with proof that the parent has not travelled; others treat it as a cancellation with a pro-rata refund less a fee. Both are worse than moving the date a week earlier, so diarize the effective date and move it at least seven days before.
Should I pay annually or monthly if processing is uncertain?
Monthly plans limit the cash at risk to the deposit and set-up fee until the policy starts, which suits long or uncertain waits. Annual plans cost less in total and refund in full on a refusal at most insurers. Either is fine as long as the date is moved before it arrives.
Does moving the date change the medical answers?
It can. Stability is measured back from the effective date, so a later date means a longer look-back. A medication change during the wait may make a condition unstable for the new date. Re-check the medication list each time you move the date and tell the insurer of any change.
