How to change the start date of super visa insurance

Email the insurer or SuperVisaDirect with the policy number and the new arrival date before the current effective date. Every insurer we compare moves the date at that point without charge, though the premium is recalculated if the parent crosses an age band. After the effective date, options narrow to a pro-rata cancellation or a case-by-case change with proof the parent has not travelled.

Email the insurer or SuperVisaDirect with the policy number and the new arrival date before the current effective date. Every insurer we compare moves the date at that point without charge. The premium is recalculated only if the parent crosses an age band or the insurer’s rates changed. After the effective date has passed, the options narrow to a pro-rata cancellation or a case-by-case re-dating with proof the parent never travelled.

Date changes are routine because the policy is bought before the visa decision. Immigration.ca recorded September 2026 processing of 70 days for India, 77 for China, 90 for the Philippines, 92 for Pakistan, 44 for Nigeria, 97 for the UK, 116 for the US and 265 for Iran. India was 208 days in March 2026.

What do you need before you start?

The policy number, the parent’s full name, the current effective date, the new arrival date, and the flight booking if you have one. Check the medication list again. The stability period is counted back from the new date, so a later date can change the answer.

Item Why
Policy number and insured name Identifies the policy; the host as payer may not be enough
New arrival date Becomes the new effective date; expiry moves to 364 days later
Flight booking or visa issue date Some insurers ask for it when the change is large
Updated medication list To confirm the stability period still holds at the new date

How long does it take?

Five minutes to send, and usually one to three business days for a revised certificate. Ask before the current effective date, not on it. Allow a week if the request also involves an age-band recalculation and a payment.

The 6 steps to change the date before the policy starts

  1. Confirm today is before the current effective date. If it is, the change is routine. If not, skip to the next section.
  2. Pick the new effective date. Use the actual arrival date from the flight booking. If the visa is not yet issued, use a realistic estimate and plan to move it again.
  3. Re-check the stability period at the new date. Count back 90, 120, 180 or 365 days depending on the insurer and the parent’s age, per the pre-existing conditions page. Any medication change inside that window must be declared.
  4. Email the insurer or SuperVisaDirect. Include the policy number, the insured’s name, the current date, the requested date and the reason. “Visa processing delay” is enough.
  5. Pay or receive any premium difference. This arises only if the parent’s age band changes or the insurer’s rate card moved. Keep the receipt with the application file.
  6. Download the revised certificate and replace the IRCC upload if the application has not been submitted. If it has, keep the revised certificate for the border. The officer checks coverage from the actual date of entry, per the officer instructions.

What are the rules at each insurer?

Before the effective date, all eight insurers we compare allow the change. After it, the published terms differ and most treat the request as a cancellation. Terms seen October 2026 in insurer wordings and the PolicyAdvisor and BestQuote summaries — verify at quote time.

Insurer (underwriter) Change before effective date After effective date, parent not travelled
TuGo (iA Financial Group) Yes, no charge Confirm with the insurer; cancellation fee $250 otherwise
21st Century (Manulife) Yes, no charge Confirm with the insurer; cancellation fee $250 otherwise
Secure Travel/RIMI (iA Financial Group; claims by MSH) Yes, no charge Confirm with MSH; administration fee applies on refunds
GMS (Group Medical Services) Yes, no charge Full refund only if no travel and before effective date; partial refund less administration fee after
Destination (Zurich Insurance Company Ltd, Canadian Branch) Yes, no charge Confirm with the insurer; cancellation fee $150, $25 partial
Allianz Global Assistance (CUMIS General Insurance) Yes, no charge Confirm with the insurer
Manulife CoverMe (Manufacturers Life) Yes, no charge Confirm with the insurer; $25 minimum fee on cancellation
Travelance (Old Republic Insurance Company of Canada) Yes, no charge Confirm with the insurer; cancellation fee $250

GMS’s policy wording is the clearest: “Full refunds are available if no travel has taken place” when requested before the effective date, and partial refunds carry an administration fee after it.

What if the policy has already started?

Call the insurer the same day. Explain that the parent has not entered Canada and ask for a re-dating with proof, such as the passport pages showing no Canadian stamp or the IRCC account showing the visa still in process. If re-dating is refused, cancel for a pro-rata refund less the fee and buy a new policy with the correct date.

Situation Likely outcome
Policy started last week, parent still abroad, no claim Re-dating at some insurers; otherwise pro-rata refund less fee
Policy started three months ago, parent still abroad Pro-rata refund less fee; new policy needed
Parent arrived before the effective date Uninsured gap; buy immediate cover for the gap days and keep the main policy, or re-date
Parent arrived after the effective date Policy ran unused for those days; most insurers do not refund them

The cancellation page has the fee table and the documents needed. The processing delay page explains how to set the first date so moves are rare.

Questions people ask

Is there a fee to change the start date?

Not at the insurers we compare, as long as the request arrives before the current effective date. The only cost is a premium adjustment if the parent reaches a new age band before the new date, or if the insurer's rates changed. Confirm the terms on your policy at quote time, because wording can change.

How many times can I move the date?

Insurers do not publish a limit, and families routinely move it two or three times during a long processing wait. Each change must be requested before the effective date in force at the time. Keep every confirmation email so the chain of dates is documented for the border.

Can I move the date earlier if the visa comes quickly?

Yes. The same rule applies: ask before the current effective date. A parent who lands before the policy starts is uninsured until it begins and may fail the border check, because the officer looks for a full year of coverage from the date of entry. Move the date to the actual arrival date.

What happens if the parent crosses an age band before the new date?

The premium is recalculated at the new age. On October 2026 rates, Secure Travel charged $2,051 at 65 and $3,380 at 70, so a parent turning 70 before a delayed arrival pays the higher rate. The insurer bills the difference; a younger-band move refunds it.

What if I need to change the date after the policy has started?

Contact the insurer immediately. Some will re-date a policy if the parent has not travelled and no claim exists, with proof such as the passport showing no Canadian entry. Others treat it as a cancellation with a pro-rata refund less a fee. GMS states that full refunds are available only if no travel has taken place and the request is before the effective date.

Does changing the start date affect the stability period?

Yes. The stability period is measured backwards from the effective date. A later date means the parent's medications must be unchanged for longer. A dose change during the wait can make a condition unstable for the new date even though it was stable for the original one. Re-check before confirming the move.
