Edmonton hosts need at least $100,000 of emergency medical cover for one year from a Canadian insurer, priced from about $1,577 a year at 55 and $4,000 at 75 with stable conditions covered (lowest of eight insurers compared in October 2026). SuperVisaDirect serves Ontario residents today; coverage for Alberta residents is coming in 2028, so this page is informational.
Who in Edmonton is buying super visa insurance?
Edmonton’s 1,010,899 residents were 11.54 percent South Asian (114,985 people), 9.01 percent Southeast Asian, 7.58 percent African and 7.02 percent East Asian in the 2021 Census (Statistics Canada Census Profile, via Wikipedia). Mill Woods and the south side hold the city’s Punjabi community; the Filipino community is spread across the north and west.
Nationally, India supplied 56 percent of super visa applicants from 2011 to 2023 and the Philippines 4 percent, and Edmonton’s demand follows that split with a larger Filipino share than Ontario cities. Parents apply from abroad and see a panel physician in their own country for the immigration medical. September 2026 processing ran 70 days for India and 90 for the Philippines.
What does IRCC require from an Edmonton host?
The IRCC rules are national: at least $100,000 per applicant for health care, hospitalisation and repatriation, valid one year from the date of entry and on each entry, from a Canadian insurer or an OSFI-authorised foreign insurer issuing in Canada. Instalments are accepted with a deposit; quotes are not.
| IRCC requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Minimum coverage | $100,000 per applicant |
| Must cover | Health care, hospitalisation, repatriation |
| Validity | At least 1 year from date of entry, on each entry |
| Insurer | Canadian, or OSFI-authorised foreign insurer issuing in Canada |
| Proof | Certificate naming the underwriter, uploaded with application, shown to CBSA |
| Not accepted | Quotes, broker letters, Indian or Philippine domestic insurers |
Full rules are on our super visa insurance guide.
How does buying work, and when can Edmonton use SuperVisaDirect?
Buying is online with any licensed agent: enter the parent’s age, entry date and health answers, compare prices, pay, and download the certificate naming the underwriter. SuperVisaDirect’s quoter serves Ontario residents now and Alberta residents from 2028. The site is in English, with Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu and Tagalog pages planned before the Alberta launch.
Secure Travel, the lowest-priced of the eight carriers at every age in October 2026, is reviewed on our Secure Travel page.
What does an Edmonton hospital charge an uninsured parent?
Alberta Health Services does not publish a single public day rate for visitors at the Royal Alexandra or University of Alberta Hospital. The Alberta Medical Association advises physicians to bill out-of-country patients two to five times the provincial fee schedule, on top of the hospital charge. Published non-resident rates elsewhere give the scale.
| Item | Ontario (QCH, Apr 2026) ($) | BC (PHSA, Nov 2025) ($) |
|---|---|---|
| Ward bed, per day | 4,005 | 9,270 |
| Intensive care, per day | 15,642 | 18,105 |

What will it cost an Edmonton family?
Annual premium, $100,000 coverage, $0 deductible, stable pre-existing covered, rates seen Oct 2026 — verify at quote time.

Questions people ask
Can I buy from SuperVisaDirect if I live in Edmonton?
Not yet. Super Visa Direct Insurance Services is licensed in Ontario and serves Ontario residents now. Coverage for Alberta residents is coming in 2028. Until then, this page gives the IRCC rules, the eight insurers and October 2026 prices so you can buy correctly from an Alberta-licensed agent or an insurer directly.
Which insurers sell super visa insurance to Edmonton hosts?
All eight we track: TuGo and Secure Travel (iA Financial Group), 21st Century and Manulife CoverMe (Manulife), GMS (direct insurer, Regina), Destination (Zurich Canadian Branch), Allianz (CUMIS) and Travelance (Old Republic). The province exclusions we found cover Quebec, New Brunswick and Nunavut only, so Alberta is served by every carrier.
My parents are from Punjab and in their 60s. What stability period applies?
At 60 to 69, Secure Travel needs 90 days of stability, TuGo and Destination 120, and Manulife, 21st Century, GMS, Travelance and Allianz 180. Stable means no medication changes, new symptoms, tests or referrals in that window. If a dose changed four months ago, only the 90- and 120-day carriers will cover that condition.
Does the AHCIP waiting period affect my parents on a super visa?
No. Super visa holders are visitors and never qualify for AHCIP, so the up-to-three-month wait is irrelevant to them; private insurance must cover the whole stay. The wait matters if a parent later becomes a permanent resident in Alberta, when a visitor policy bridges the gap until AHCIP starts.
