Allianz Global Assistance (AZGA Service Canada Inc.) administers a policy underwritten by CUMIS General Insurance Company, part of The Co-operators group. TuGo administers a policy issued by Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services Inc., part of iA Financial Group. Both are Canadian insurers, so both certificates meet IRCC's rule.
Which covers an older parent?
TuGo Comprehensive has no maximum age and requires 365 days' stability at 86 and over. Allianz insures to 89 with 180 days' stability from 60. For a parent of 90 or more only TuGo is available; for a parent of 86 to 89 both are, and TuGo was the lower price at every published age.
How does each treat a trip home mid-stay?
Both keep the policy in force and exclude expenses in the home country. Allianz's certificate adds that no premium is refunded for time spent at home. TuGo's wording also continues the policy. Neither pays for treatment in India, the Philippines or any other country of origin, so the parent is effectively unprotected until they return.
Which has the better deductible options?
TuGo, with $0 to $10,000 and a $0 default. PolicyAdvisor lists a single $500 deductible for Allianz, which removes the 15 to 40 percent discounts available elsewhere. If you intend to trade a higher deductible for a lower premium, TuGo gives you the ladder to do it.
