British and European parents need only a $7 eTA to fly to Canada, but they need insurance, because the GHIC, the EHIC and the NHS pay nothing in Canada. GOV.UK lists no reciprocal healthcare agreement with Canada, and the European Commission limits the EHIC to the EU, EEA, Switzerland and the UK. A 65-year-old pays about $133 a month, roughly £71 or €83, for $100,000 of cover without pre-existing conditions, per PolicyAdvisor’s October 2026 table. Buy before the flight, so no waiting period applies.
Does the GHIC, EHIC or NHS cover my parents in Canada?
No. The three systems British and European families rely on at home all stop at the edge of Europe and a short list of other territories. Canada is not on any list, and a Canadian hospital bills a visitor from Leeds or Lyon at the same non-resident rate as a visitor from anywhere else.
| Cover from home | Where it is valid | Valid in Canada? | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK GHIC | EEA countries, Montenegro, Australia, Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man, St Helena, Tristan da Cunha, Ascension; Switzerland for British, Swiss and EU nationals | No | NHS |
| UK reciprocal agreements | 20 non-EU countries and territories, including Australia and New Zealand; “if a non-EU country or territory is not listed on this page, the UK does not have a reciprocal healthcare agreement with it” | No | GOV.UK |
| EU EHIC | The 27 EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and the UK | No | European Commission |
| NHS or a national health service | Home country only | No | GOV.UK Canada advice |
The NHS page states the UK GHIC “is not a replacement for travel insurance,” and the Commission says the EHIC “is not an alternative to travel insurance.” The Foreign Office’s Canada page says “medical treatment can be very expensive” and “there are no special arrangements for British visitors.”
What does a Canadian hospital charge a visitor?
$3,750 to $4,005 a day on a general ward and $4,500 to $15,642 a day in intensive care, with physician fees billed separately. Niagara Health’s 2026-27 schedule also states that non-residents must pay hospital and physician fees before receiving treatment. The family in Canada is usually the one holding the card.
| Service | Niagara Health (Niagara region) | Queensway Carleton (Ottawa) |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency department visit | $850 | $1,242 |
| General ward, per day | $3,750 | $4,005 |
| Intensive care, per day | $4,500 | $15,642 |
| Physician fees | Billed separately | Billed separately |
Sources: Niagara Health and Queensway Carleton. A Canadian visitor plan with a $0 deductible pays the hospital through its assistance line, so the family does not fund the bill and claim it back.
Do my parents need a visa, and does it ask for insurance?
No visa, and no. Citizens of the UK, Ireland and every EU member state are visa-exempt on IRCC’s entry requirements list. Flying in requires an eTA; arriving by car, bus, train or boat requires only a passport. Neither asks for insurance, so the decision is the family’s.
| eTA fact | IRCC wording |
|---|---|
| Cost | “An eTA costs CAD $7” |
| Approval time | “Most applicants get their eTA approval (via an email) within minutes” |
| Validity | Up to five years or until the passport expires |
| Length of each visit | “normally for up to six months at a time” |
| Arriving by land or sea | No eTA needed; passport only |
Source: IRCC eTA facts. Because the eTA is approved in minutes, buy the insurance as soon as the flight is booked and set the effective date to the arrival date. The visa vs eTA page covers mixed families, such as a British parent and a non-EU spouse.
Can a UK or EU annual travel policy do the job?
Sometimes, for a short trip, and only after three questions are answered in writing. Many annual multi-trip policies exclude or separately price North America, cap each trip at a set number of days, and stop or screen at a set age. The policy wording decides, not the brochure.
| Question for the UK or EU insurer | Why it matters in Canada |
|---|---|
| Is Canada, or “worldwide including North America,” covered? | Some policies price Europe only or exclude the US and Canada |
| What is the maximum length of one trip? | A six-month winter exceeds most annual-policy trip limits |
| What is the age limit and is medical screening required? | Parents over 70 are often excluded or loaded |
| Does the insurer pay the hospital directly in Canada? | Canadian hospitals bill non-residents up front; most European insurers reimburse later |
| Is the excess per claim? | A Canadian emergency visit alone is $850 to $1,242 |
A Canadian visitor plan avoids the uncertainty. For a super visa the question does not arise. IRCC accepts only a Canadian insurer or a foreign insurer on OSFI’s register issuing through its Canadian business, and UK and EU retail insurers do not qualify. The UK super visa page has the detail.
What does it cost in pounds and euros?
A few dollars a day. Visitor plans are priced per day, so a two-week visit for a grandchild’s birth costs a fortnight’s premium, and a six-month winter costs six months. The table applies PolicyAdvisor’s 30-day rates to the trip lengths European families most often book.
Estimated premium, $100,000 coverage, no pre-existing cover, derived from PolicyAdvisor’s monthly rates (modified 12 Oct 2026) divided by 30 — verify at quote time. Sterling and euro figures are approximate conversions at 1 CAD = 0.53281 GBP and 0.62526 EUR (exchange-rates.org, 1 Oct 2026).
| Visitor’s age | 7 days | 30 days | 60 days | 183 days (6 months) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 55 | about $26 (£14, €16) | $110.70 (£59, €69) | about $221 (£118, €138) | about $675 (£360, €422) |
| 65 | about $31 (£17, €19) | $133.20 (£71, €83) | about $266 (£142, €166) | about $812 (£433, €508) |
| 75 | about $56 (£30, €35) | $240.00 (£128, €150) | about $480 (£256, €300) | about $1,464 (£780, €915) |
| 85 | about $95 (£51, €59) | $405.00 (£216, €253) | about $810 (£432, €506) | about $2,470 (£1,316, €1,544) |
Stable pre-existing cover adds 10 to 40%: at 65 the 30-day figure rises from $133.20 to $168.60, and at 75 from $240.00 to $328.80. For a parent on blood pressure or statin medication the uplift buys the only part of the policy they are likely to claim on; see pre-existing conditions. Worked examples are on the 2-month trip and 6-month trip pages.
Which carriers suit British and European visitors?
Any of the eight in our comparison; the one sold on SuperVisaDirect is TuGo’s plan, underwritten by iA Financial Group. The useful filters are the age limit, a side-trip clause that fits a parent who may cross into the US, and the stability period for pre-existing conditions. Policies cover a side trip to the US only within limits: 30 days and under 50% of the term at GMS, 45 days at Travelance, 30 days or 49% at Manulife. See side trips to the US.
| Carrier (underwriter) | Note for UK and EU visitors |
|---|---|
| Secure Travel (iA Financial Group, claims by MSH) | Coverage to age 90; 90-day stability to age 69 |
| GMS (Group Medical Services) | No medical questions under 55; must be under 80; repatriation capped at $5,000 |
| TuGo (iA Financial Group) | No maximum age; coverage up to $300,000; worldwide side trips if most of the term is in Canada |
| Manulife CoverMe (Manufacturers Life) | To age 85; coverage up to $200,000; 180-day stability |
| Allianz Global Assistance (CUMIS General Insurance) | To age 89; coverage up to $500,000; pauses cover during home-country trips |
| Destination (Zurich Insurance Company Ltd, Canadian Branch) | Deductibles to $10,000 for families used to a large excess |
| 21st Century (Manulife) | Basic plan has no age limit; 5% off per travelling companion |
| Travelance (Old Republic Insurance Company of Canada) | To age 85; 45-day side trips |
A British parent who wants to stay longer than six months, or who will return every year, should read the decision guide on the super visa. For a single winter, the eTA and a visitor plan bought before the flight is the simpler route. How to buy walks through the purchase from Canada, in Canadian dollars, with the parent’s passport details to hand.

Questions people ask
Does the GHIC or EHIC work in Canada?
No. The NHS states the UK GHIC is valid in the EEA, Montenegro, Australia, the Crown dependencies and a few UK territories, and Switzerland for some nationals. The EU's EHIC covers the 27 EU states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and the UK. Canada is on neither list, and the NHS adds that the GHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance.
Does the UK have a reciprocal healthcare agreement with Canada?
No. GOV.UK lists 20 non-EU countries and territories with agreements, including Australia and New Zealand, and states that if a country is not listed the UK has no agreement with it. Canada is not listed. The Foreign Office's Canada advice says medical treatment can be very expensive and there are no special arrangements for British visitors.
Do my parents need a visa for Canada?
No. Citizens of the UK, Ireland and every EU member state are visa-exempt. When flying they need an eTA, which costs $7, is linked to the passport and is usually approved by email within minutes. Arriving by car, bus, train or boat from the US needs only a passport. Each visit is normally up to six months.
Can my parents rely on a UK or EU annual travel policy instead?
Possibly for a short trip, but check three things in writing: that Canada or North America is included, the maximum trip length, and the age limit and medical screening. Canadian hospitals require non-residents to pay before treatment and do not bill a UK or EU insurer directly, so the family pays and claims back. A Canadian visitor plan pays the hospital through its assistance line.
How much does visitor insurance cost in pounds or euros?
For $100,000 without pre-existing cover, a 65-year-old pays about $31 for 7 days, $133 for 30 days and $812 for six months, roughly £17, £71 and £433 or €19, €83 and €508. A 75-year-old pays $56, $240 and $1,464. Conversions use 1 October 2026 rates and are approximate; the quoter prices in Canadian dollars.
Should a British or European parent get a super visa instead?
Only to stay more than six months at a time. The super visa allows five years per entry but requires a $100,000 Canadian policy for a full year, an immigration medical exam and a host income test. For a winter or a summer, the eTA plus a visitor plan is simpler. The decision guide compares the two routes.
