Each entry on a super visa allows a stay of five years, for anyone who entered Canada on or after 22 June 2023, per IRCC’s length of stay page. The visa itself is a multiple-entry visa valid for up to ten years, per the officer instructions, or until the passport expires. Every new entry starts a fresh five-year stay, and a parent can also apply from inside Canada to extend by up to two years. Insurance must be valid for one year from each entry and renewed so it never lapses.
The three clocks run separately: the stay, the visa, and the passport. Families confuse them, and the insurance renewal has to follow all three.
What is the difference between the stay and the validity?
The stay is how long the parent may remain after one entry; the validity is how long the visa can be used to enter. Five years and ten years respectively, with the passport expiry capping both.
| Term | Length | Starts | Ends | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Authorized stay | 5 years per entry | Date of each entry | 5 years later, or on departure | IRCC length of stay |
| Visa validity | Up to 10 years, multiple entry | Date issued | 10 years, or passport expiry if earlier | IRCC officer instructions |
| Insurance | At least 1 year from each entry; renewed for the whole stay | Date of entry | Must not lapse while in Canada | IRCC forms and documents |
| Extension from inside Canada | Up to 2 years | Approval of visitor record | As stated on the record | IRCC length of stay |
A parent whose passport expires in three years holds a visa that expires in three years, whatever the ten-year maximum says. Renew the passport first if a long validity matters.
How does the stay work for different entry dates?
By the date of entry, not the date of application. IRCC’s page separates three groups.
| Situation | Authorized stay | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Applied on or after 22 June 2023 | 5 years at a time | IRCC length of stay |
| Entered on or after 22 June 2023, whatever the application date | 5 years at a time, even without a stamp | IRCC length of stay |
| Applied and entered before 22 June 2023 | The period the officer granted at entry, for example 2 years; up to 5 if still eligible | IRCC length of stay |
For the last group, leaving and re-entering on the still-valid visa gives a new five-year period under the current rule.
Does re-entry restart the five years?
Yes. Leaving Canada before the authorized stay ends and re-entering gives a new period, and IRCC’s page lists it as one of two ways to stay longer. The border officer may ask for the application documents and must see insurance valid for one year from the new entry date, per the after you apply page.
The practical sequence for a parent who goes home for six weeks in year three: check the visa and passport validity, renew the policy so a full year shows on the return date, carry the certificate, and expect a new five-year stay on return. The trip home mid-stay page covers whether the policy pays abroad.
How does an extension from inside Canada work?
By a visitor record application, filed before the current status expires, with approval possible for up to two years, per IRCC’s length-of-stay page. The fee is $100 per person, and applying at least 30 days before expiry is the standard advice; the parent keeps maintained status while the application is processed, per Silaws. IRCC’s extend your stay page notes that a visitor record is not a visa; it does not allow re-entry.
| Option | How | Effect on insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Leave and re-enter | Fly out before the stay ends, return on the valid visa | New 1-year-from-entry requirement; renew before return |
| Visitor record | Apply online, $100, before status expires | Keep the policy continuous; include the certificate as supporting proof |
| Do nothing | Status expires | Loss of status; restoration costs an extra $200 |
What does the insurance have to do across the five years?
Stay continuous and show a full year on every entry. IRCC’s forms and documents page says to renew the policy if it expires before the parent leaves, and the after-you-apply page says to maintain health insurance while in Canada and show valid insurance on re-entry. Annual renewal with the same carrier avoids a new stability period for pre-existing conditions; see renewals and switching insurers.
Put four dates in the host’s calendar on landing day: insurance expiry, five-year stay end, passport expiry and visa expiry. Act 60 days before the earliest.

Questions people ask
Can my parent really stay 5 years in one go on a super visa?
Yes. IRCC's length-of-stay page says anyone who entered Canada on or after 22 June 2023 can stay five years at a time, even if the officer did not stamp the passport. Earlier entrants are limited to the period the officer granted at entry. The parent must keep the passport and health insurance valid for the whole stay.
What is the difference between the 5-year stay and the 10-year validity?
The stay is how long the parent may remain after each entry: five years. The validity is how long the visa can be used to enter Canada: up to ten years or until the passport expires, whichever is first. A parent can enter in year one, stay five years, leave, and enter again in year six for another five years if the visa is still valid.
Does leaving Canada and coming back reset the 5 years?
Yes. Each entry on a valid super visa gives a new authorized stay of five years. IRCC lists leaving and re-entering as a way to get a new period. The border officer can still ask for the application documents and must see insurance valid for one year from the new entry date.
Can my parent extend the stay without leaving Canada?
Yes, by applying for a visitor record before the current status expires. IRCC's super visa page says an extension from inside Canada can be approved for up to two years. Apply at least 30 days before expiry; the parent keeps maintained status while the application is processed.
Does my parent need insurance for the whole 5 years?
Yes. IRCC requires the policy to be valid for at least one year from entry and says to renew it if it expires before the parent leaves, so coverage continues for the entire stay. In practice that means an annual policy renewed each year, with a full year showing on every re-entry.
What happens if my parent stays past the authorized period?
They lose status and must apply for restoration, which costs an extra $200 on top of the visitor record fee, or leave. Overstaying can affect future applications. Put the five-year date, the passport expiry and each insurance expiry in a calendar when the parent lands, and apply to extend or plan a trip out well before the earliest of them.
