Super visa insurance with a pending test or specialist referral

A test, scan or specialist referral pending on the effective date makes the related condition unstable at every super visa insurer we compare. It stays excluded until the result is in, no treatment change follows and the stability period has run. GMS treats any reason to expect treatment as an ineligibility at 55 and over; Allianz requires no awaited referral, surgery or test result.

A test, scan or specialist referral that is pending on the effective date makes the related condition unstable at every super visa insurer we compare. The condition stays excluded until the result is in, no treatment change follows and the insurer’s stability period has run: 90 days at Secure Travel to 69, 120 days at TuGo and Destination from 60 to 69, and 180 days at Manulife, GMS, Allianz (from 60) and 21st Century Enhanced in October 2026. GMS goes further at 55 and over: any reason to expect treatment is an ineligibility.

This is the stability rule families most often miss. The medication did not change, so the parent seems stable. The referral letter in the drawer says otherwise.

What do insurers ask about pending tests?

Questionnaires ask whether the parent is awaiting any test, test result, specialist appointment, surgery or treatment, and whether a doctor has recommended any of them. Allianz requires that the parent is not awaiting a specialist referral, surgery or further test results. TuGo tests “no new treatment received, prescribed or recommended.”

Typical question Why it is asked
Awaiting any test, scan or test result? A pending investigation is unstable everywhere
Referred to a specialist, appointment not yet held? A pending referral is unstable everywhere
Any surgery or procedure recommended or scheduled? Excluded everywhere; eligibility at GMS and Allianz
Any reason to seek or expect medical treatment? GMS ineligibility at any age, with exceptions for routine chronic care
Has a doctor advised against travel? Usually voids cover for the related condition

GMS allows two exceptions to its “reason to seek treatment” rule: regular care of a chronic condition, and evaluations required for the visa. The immigration medical exam does not make the parent ineligible.

What is pending, and what is routine?

Pending means ordered and not yet resulted, or recommended and not yet done, where the purpose is to diagnose a symptom or decide on treatment. Routine means scheduled monitoring of a known stable condition, with no change expected. The purpose decides, and the doctor’s note is the evidence.

Situation on the effective date Pending?
Annual blood test for a stable condition, no change expected Routine at most insurers
Blood test ordered because of a new symptom Pending
Scan ordered to investigate pain, result awaited Pending
Specialist appointment booked, not yet held Pending
Specialist discharged the parent with no follow-up Not pending
Result back, doctor confirms no action Not pending from that date
Result back, treatment changed Not pending, but the change resets the clock
Surgery recommended, parent has declined Pending at TuGo and Allianz; GMS ineligibility

Manulife loses stability on a recent specialist referral as well as on new or worsening symptoms, so a referral alone, with no symptom, is enough.

Which insurers cover a parent with something pending?

All 8 insurers we compare will issue a policy, with the investigated condition excluded, except GMS at 55 and over where a pending or expected test is an ineligibility. The practical difference is how long the exclusion lasts once the result is back.

Insurer (underwriter) Pending test on the effective date Days after a clear result at 65 Days after a clear result at 72
Secure Travel/RIMI (iA Financial Group; claims by MSH) Condition excluded 90 180
TuGo (iA Financial Group) Condition excluded; 7-day rider to 79 120 180
Destination (Zurich, Canadian Branch) Condition excluded 120 180
Allianz (CUMIS General Insurance) Not eligible while awaiting results 180 180
Manulife CoverMe Plan B (Manufacturers Life) Condition excluded 180 180
GMS (Group Medical Services) Ineligible at 55+ while treatment expected 180 180
21st Century Enhanced (Manulife) Condition excluded; questionnaire 55 to 85 180 180
Travelance Premier (Old Republic) Condition excluded 180 180

Stability periods seen October 2026 — verify in the policy wording. The full age matrix is on the stability periods by insurer page. Whether the period runs from the result date or from an earlier date is set by each wording; most count from the last change, which after a clear result is the doctor’s confirmation of no action.

What should you document?

Get the referral letter or test requisition with its date and reason, the appointment date, and once the result is in, the report and the doctor’s letter saying either no action or what changed. Keep the dates in one list. The doctor’s note of why a test was ordered is the document that separates routine from pending.

Keep the completed questionnaire; the THIA Bill of Rights entitles the buyer to a copy before the policy starts. The claims page explains the records request.

What typically voids a claim?

The common pattern is a referral in the records that the questionnaire did not declare, followed by an admission for the condition under investigation. The insurer denies the claim and can void the policy. Manulife exclusion 7 and GMS General Condition 8 apply, and TuGo adds a $15,000 deductible for a wrong answer at 60 or over.

Should you wait, exclude, or buy a no-pre-existing plan?

Wait if the result is weeks away: IRCC requires the policy to run a year from the date of entry, and the start date can be moved before the policy begins. Buy with the condition excluded if the trip cannot wait and the condition is minor. Use TuGo’s 7-day rider to 79 if the condition is the one most likely to cause a claim. A no-pre-existing plan excludes everything, not only the condition under investigation, and is rarely the better choice.

The parent’s doctor and the insurer’s policy wording decide whether the condition is stable; this page describes insurer rules, not medical advice. SuperVisaDirect’s advisor can run the questionnaire with the parent on the line by callback, Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 6:00pm ET. If the test is a biopsy, read cancer; if surgery follows, read recent surgery.

Questions people ask

My mother is waiting for an echocardiogram. Can she get super visa insurance?

Yes, but the heart condition being investigated is excluded until the result is in, no treatment change follows and the stability period has run. Everything else is covered as normal. At GMS, 55 and over, pending or expected heart tests are an ineligibility, not an exclusion. The start date can be moved past the result.

Does a routine annual blood test count as a pending test?

A routine monitoring test with no change expected is treated as monitoring by most insurers, not as an investigation. A test ordered because of a symptom, or to decide whether to change treatment, is pending. The difference is why it was ordered. Ask the doctor to write that down.

What if the referral was made but the appointment is months away?

It is still pending. TuGo tests no new treatment recommended, Allianz tests not awaiting a referral, and GMS declines any reason to expect treatment. An appointment that is months away makes the condition unstable for all of that time. Either wait, or buy with that condition excluded.

Can we just not mention the referral?

The referral is in the records the insurer requests at claim time. Not declaring it is a misrepresentation, which lets the insurer void the whole policy, not only the related claim. TuGo adds a $15,000 deductible for a wrong answer at 60 or over. Declare it, accept the exclusion and move the start date if possible.

What happens once the result comes back clear?

If no treatment changes, the condition becomes stable from the date the doctor records the result and confirms no further action. The stability period then runs from that date at most insurers. If treatment changes, the clock runs from the change. Get the doctor's letter saying which it is.
