Parents applying from Kenya need a super visa policy with at least $100,000 of emergency medical coverage, valid one year from the date of entry, from a Canadian insurer, paid before the file is submitted. IRCC’s processing tool showed 141 days for Kenya on 14 October 2026, longer than the 112-day service standard. At age 65, $100,000 of cover with stable pre-existing conditions runs about $2,051 to $3,095 a year, or roughly KSh 188,000 to 284,000.
Who buys the insurance: the parent in Nairobi or the child in Ottawa?
The child in Canada should buy it. Your parent is the insured person and must be named on the certificate, but the purchaser and payer can be you. That keeps the premium in Canadian dollars, avoids foreign-card declines and shilling conversion, and puts the refund paperwork in your hands if the visa is refused. M-Pesa is not a payment option for any Canadian insurer.
In practice the search starts in Kenya. A parent in Nairobi, Mombasa or Kisumu hears from an agent that insurance is required, finds a Jubilee or Britam travel plan priced in shillings, and buys it. That policy is then uploaded to the application, and the file is refused. The section below explains why.
If you are the parent reading this, stop before paying anything in shillings. Send this page to your son or daughter in Canada on WhatsApp. They can get a quote, pay in dollars, and send you the certificate as a PDF to upload.
Why Jubilee, Britam and CIC policies are refused
IRCC accepts two kinds of insurer only: a Canadian insurance company, or a foreign company authorized by OSFI to sell accident and sickness insurance in Canada and listed on OSFI’s public register. No Kenyan insurer meets that test. There is no “IRCC-approved list” of foreign insurers; the register is the test.
The officer instructions are specific. A foreign insurer’s policy must have been issued “in the course of its insurance business in Canada” and must carry a statement saying so. Brokers and claims administrators are not insurers and will not appear on the OSFI list. Quotes are not accepted; the policy must be paid in full or by instalments with a deposit.
| Kenyan insurer | Sells travel cover in Kenya? | On OSFI’s register? | Accepted for a super visa? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jubilee Insurance | Yes | No | No |
| Britam | Yes | No | No |
| CIC Insurance Group | Yes | No | No |
We checked OSFI’s register on 18 October 2026; none of the three appears, and none operates a Canadian branch. A refused application forfeits the $100 visa fee and the $85 biometrics fee, and the medical exam fee is not refunded either. Worse, the parent has usually paid a non-refundable premium. Read the requirements in full before buying anything.
What does super visa insurance cost in Kenyan shillings?
At age 60, rates seen in October 2026 run $1,621 to $2,741 a year for $100,000 of cover with stable pre-existing conditions. At 65 the range is $2,051 to $3,095, and at 70 it is $3,380 to $4,683. Converted at about KSh 92 to the dollar, that is roughly KSh 149,000 to 430,000 depending on age and carrier.

| Carrier (underwriter) | Age 60 (CAD) | Age 60 (KES, approx.) | Age 65 (CAD) | Age 65 (KES, approx.) | Age 70 (CAD) | Age 70 (KES, approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Secure Travel (iA Financial Group, claims by MSH) | $1,621 | KSh 149,000 | $2,051 | KSh 188,000 | $3,380 | KSh 310,000 |
| GMS (Group Medical Services, direct insurer) | $1,799 | KSh 165,000 | $2,405 | KSh 221,000 | $4,296 | KSh 395,000 |
| Destination Travel Group (Zurich Insurance Company Ltd, Canadian Branch) | $1,840 | KSh 169,000 | $2,624 | KSh 241,000 | $4,179 | KSh 384,000 |
| TuGo (iA Financial Group) | $2,398 | KSh 220,000 | $2,986 | KSh 274,000 | $3,985 | KSh 366,000 |
| Manulife CoverMe Plan B (Manufacturers Life) | $2,529 | KSh 232,000 | $2,874 | KSh 264,000 | $4,181 | KSh 384,000 |
| 21st Century Enhanced (Manulife) | $2,741 | KSh 252,000 | $3,095 | KSh 284,000 | $4,683 | KSh 430,000 |
Source tables: BestQuote and PolicyAdvisor. A $500 deductible cuts the premium by roughly 15% at Manulife, and a $5,000 deductible by roughly 35%. Plans that exclude pre-existing conditions are cheaper, but a parent on blood pressure or diabetes medication needs the stable-condition cover. If a lump sum is hard, IRCC accepts monthly instalments with a deposit, which also limits cash tied up during a long wait.
The visa fee of $100 plus $85 for biometrics is about KSh 17,000 at the same rate. Lowest of the six carriers compared on 18 October 2026 for a 65-year-old with stable pre-existing conditions: Secure Travel at $2,051.
How long does a super visa take from Kenya, and when should the policy start?
IRCC’s processing-times tool showed 141 days for Kenya when its data was updated on 14 October 2026, about four and a half months. Kenya is not in immigration.ca’s country table of 22 September 2026. IRCC says the estimate includes biometrics time and is not a guarantee.
A long wait makes the start date the main risk. A certificate must be in the file at submission, but the parent will not travel for months. Choose a carrier that lets you move the effective date before coverage begins, set it beyond the estimate, and move it again when the passport is returned. The parent then has the full 365 days from the date of entry that the officer instructions require.
| Country of application | IRCC tool, 14 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|
| Kenya | 141 days |
| Ghana | 25 days |
| Nigeria (immigration.ca, 22 Sep 2026) | 44 days |
| Egypt | 43 days |
| India | 77 days |
The IRCC service standard is 112 days. Do not book a non-refundable flight until the passport is back.
Timing tips for Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu applicants
Book the medical exam and biometrics as soon as the application is submitted. The insurance certificate must already be in the file at submission. The medical exam result is valid for 12 months; with a 141-day wait, time it so it does not expire before the visa is issued.
Immigration medical exam. Only an IRCC panel physician can do it. A report from a family doctor or a county hospital is not accepted. Search by country on the IRCC tool and phone to confirm fees, which the clinic sets. Bring the passport and the medical request letter with the IME number.
Biometrics. Canada’s only visa application centre in Kenya is in Nairobi, per IRCC’s VAC finder. Parents in Mombasa, Kisumu or Eldoret should plan one Nairobi trip for both the exam and biometrics. Wait for the biometric instruction letter before booking.
Documents. Kenyan civil documents are issued in English, so translations are rarely needed. Proof of relationship is the host’s birth certificate from the Civil Registration Department naming the parent; if the host’s certificate is a late registration, add a second document such as the parent’s ID and the host’s school or baptism record. Documents in Swahili only need a translation per IRCC’s document page.
Share this with your son or daughter in Canada. They need to do three things: confirm their income against the LICO table for their family size, sign the letter of invitation, and buy the insurance in Canadian dollars. Send them this link and ask them to get a quote before you book anything in Kenya.
The exact IRCC document checklist
IRCC’s document list is short, but each item is checked. The insurance certificate must name the insurer, the insured parent, the coverage amount, the start and end dates, and show that it is paid. Missing any one of these turns a 141-day file into a refusal or a request for more documents.
- The online super visa application and the $100 fee plus $85 biometrics fee (family cap $170).
- A letter of invitation signed by the host child or grandchild in Canada, listing every person in the household with name and date of birth, and showing the host meets the minimum necessary income. A spouse or common-law partner may co-sign; a sibling cannot.
- Proof of the host’s income (notice of assessment, pay stubs or T4s).
- Proof of the host’s status: Canadian citizenship document, permanent resident card, or Certificate of Indian Status.
- Proof of relationship: the host’s birth certificate or another official document naming the applicant as parent or grandparent.
- Proof of paid medical insurance: $100,000 minimum, health care, hospitalization and repatriation, valid one year from the date of entry, from a Canadian insurer or an OSFI-listed foreign insurer. Quotes are not accepted.
- Proof of a completed immigration medical exam with a panel physician.
- Form IMM 5476 if a representative is used.
- Certified translations of any document not in English or French.
- Any extra documents required by the Nairobi visa office, shown when you select Kenya on the IRCC page.
The policy must also be shown to the border services officer at the airport, so print it and put it with the passport.
What a hospital stay costs without cover
The parent shows the printed certificate to the border services officer at Toronto Pearson, and again on every later entry. A policy that starts a week after arrival is a problem at the counter, not just in the file, so keep the start date aligned to the flight.
Without cover, Ontario hospitals bill non-residents a daily rate set by each hospital; published 2026 schedules run from $3,100 a day for a ward bed at Toronto East Health Network to $4,005 at Queensway Carleton, and far more in intensive care, before physician fees. A parent with stable hypertension or diabetes should buy the plan that covers stable conditions and answer the health questions exactly. Compare the stability rules on our cost page, check the refund rules, then get a quote.
Questions people ask
Can my parents buy super visa insurance from a Kenyan company like Jubilee or Britam?
No. IRCC accepts a Canadian insurer, or a foreign insurer authorized by OSFI for accident and sickness insurance and shown on OSFI's public list. Jubilee Insurance, Britam and CIC Insurance are not on that list. Their travel policies lead to refusals, and the $100 visa fee is not refunded.
Who should buy the policy, my parents in Nairobi or me in Canada?
The child in Canada should buy it. The parent is the insured person on the certificate, but the buyer and payer can be you. Paying in Canadian dollars by Canadian card avoids foreign-card declines and shilling conversion, and it keeps the refund-on-refusal paperwork in your hands. M-Pesa is not a payment option for Canadian insurers.
How much does super visa insurance cost in Kenyan shillings?
At $100,000 coverage with stable pre-existing conditions covered, rates seen in October 2026 run $1,621 to $2,741 a year at age 60 and $3,380 to $4,683 at 70. At about KSh 92 to the dollar that is roughly KSh 149,000 to 252,000 at 60 and KSh 310,000 to 430,000 at 70. These are approximate conversions, not quotes.
How long does a super visa take from Kenya right now?
IRCC's processing-times tool showed 141 days for Kenya on 14 October 2026, longer than the 112-day service standard. Kenya is not listed on immigration.ca's country table. The estimate includes biometrics time and is not a guarantee, so buy a policy whose start date can be moved and set it beyond the estimate.
Where do my parents give biometrics and do the medical exam in Kenya?
Biometrics are taken at the Canada visa application centre in Nairobi, the only one in Kenya. The immigration medical exam must be done by an IRCC panel physician; a report from a family doctor or a county hospital is not accepted. Use IRCC's panel physician search to find a listed clinic.
What if the super visa is refused after I have paid for the policy?
Most carriers refund the premium in full with the IRCC refusal letter, provided coverage has not started. Manulife, 21st Century, Travelance and Destination refund before the start date; GMS and Secure Travel refund less an administration fee. With a five-month wait, keep the start date in the future so the refund window stays open.
