IRCC requires at least $100,000 of emergency medical insurance per applicant, from a Canadian insurer, valid for one year from the date of entry. That rule, set out in the IRCC document checklist, drives almost every question below. The 25 answers are written by a licensed advisor at Super Visa Direct Insurance Services and reviewed on the date shown above.
How are the questions organized?
The questions run in the order a family meets them: the IRCC rule first, then price and payment, then pre-existing conditions, then refunds, then buying from abroad and the border, then what happens after the parent arrives. Each answer links to the page with the full detail.

Questions people ask
What insurance does IRCC require for a super visa?
Emergency medical insurance of at least $100,000 per applicant, covering health care, hospitalization and repatriation, valid for at least one year from the date of entry, from a Canadian insurer or an OSFI-authorized foreign insurer. It must be paid in full or by instalments with a deposit. Quotes are not accepted. Full rule on our [super visa insurance page](/super-visa-insurance/).
Is there an IRCC-approved list of super visa insurers?
No. IRCC publishes no approved list. The test is whether the underwriter is a Canadian insurance company, or a foreign insurer on OSFI's public register. Brokers and claims administrators do not count; the certificate must name the underwriter. The TuGo plan sold on SuperVisaDirect is underwritten by iA Financial Group, a Canadian life insurer; see [insurers we represent](/insurers-we-represent/).
Can my parent use insurance from India or the Philippines?
Almost certainly not. Domestic insurers such as Tata AIG, Bajaj Allianz, ICICI Lombard, Niva Bupa and Star Health are not on OSFI's register, and applications with their policies lead to refusals. No mainstream foreign retail product qualifies. Buy from a Canadian insurer. Details on our [super visa insurance page](/super-visa-insurance/).
How much does super visa insurance cost?
For $100,000 coverage with no deductible and stable pre-existing conditions covered, annual premiums seen in October 2026 ranged from about $1,577 at age 55 to $4,000-$9,910 at age 75, depending on insurer. Plans that exclude pre-existing conditions cost less. Age-by-age tables are on our [cost page](/super-visa-insurance/cost/).
Can I pay super visa insurance monthly?
Yes, at several insurers. IRCC accepts instalments with a deposit. 21st Century takes two months' deposit plus a $50 fee, Secure Travel two months plus $120 then ten instalments, Destination two months plus $10. Manulife, GMS and Allianz are annual only. A missed instalment lapses coverage. See [monthly plans](/super-visa-insurance/monthly/).
Does a monthly plan satisfy IRCC?
Yes. IRCC's document checklist accepts insurance paid in full or in instalments with a deposit, and the certificate shows a full year of coverage. The parent must keep paying, because a missed instalment ends coverage and the undertaking to maintain insurance for the stay. Our [monthly page](/super-visa-insurance/monthly/) lists each insurer's deposit and fee.
Does a higher deductible reduce the price much?
Yes. A $500 deductible cuts roughly 15% and a $5,000 deductible roughly 35% at Manulife; 21st Century discounts up to 40% and Travelance up to 45% at their highest deductibles. The parent pays the deductible per claim before the insurer pays. Compare the saving to the risk on our [deductibles page](/super-visa-insurance/deductibles/).
What is a pre-existing condition stability period?
The number of days before the start date during which a condition must have had no new symptoms, treatment changes or medication changes. Periods range from 90 to 365 days depending on age and insurer; for example, TuGo requires 120 days at 60-69 and 180 at 70-85. Details on [pre-existing conditions](/super-visa-insurance/pre-existing-conditions/).
Will my parent's diabetes or blood pressure be covered?
Usually yes, if the condition has been stable for the insurer's required period and the health questionnaire is answered accurately. A medication dose change inside the stability period makes the condition unstable and excluded. Answer every question with the parent present. See [pre-existing conditions](/super-visa-insurance/pre-existing-conditions/) for each insurer's rules.
What happens if we answer the health questions wrong?
The insurer can deny a claim or void the policy. In April 2025, an 88-year-old super visa holder's $96,311 Hamilton hospital bill was initially denied for undisclosed heart failure under a no-questionnaire plan. Accuracy is the single biggest factor in a paid claim. Our [claims page](/super-visa-insurance/claims/) explains how to answer and what to keep.
Is there a plan with no medical questions?
Yes. GMS asks no medical questions under age 55, and some basic plans skip the questionnaire by excluding all pre-existing conditions. A no-questions plan is not a no-exclusions plan; any condition that existed before the start date is excluded. Compare on our [pre-existing conditions page](/super-visa-insurance/pre-existing-conditions/) before choosing.
Can I get a refund if the super visa is refused?
At most insurers, yes, in full, when you send the IRCC refusal letter before the start date. Manulife, 21st Century, Travelance and Destination refund fully; GMS and Secure Travel deduct an administration fee; MSH allows 60 days. We file the request for you. Rules by insurer on our [refunds page](/super-visa-insurance/refunds/).
Can I cancel if my parent goes home early?
Yes, with a pro-rata refund of the unused months, only if no claim has been made, less a cancellation fee: TuGo $250, 21st Century $250, Travelance $250, Destination $150, Manulife $25 minimum. Send proof of the departure date. Our [refunds page](/super-visa-insurance/refunds/) lists each insurer's fee and process.
Can I buy super visa insurance while my parent is still abroad?
Yes, and you should. IRCC requires proof of insurance with the application, and the parent must be outside Canada when applying. The Canadian host buys from Ontario, enters the parent's passport details, and the proof letter is emailed to upload. Read [super visa insurance from India](/super-visa-insurance/from-india/) for the steps.
What start date should I choose when the visa is not yet approved?
Your best estimate of the arrival date. Processing varied from 44 days for Nigeria to 265 for Iran in September 2026, and India moved from 208 days in March to 70 in September. TuGo, the plan sold on SuperVisaDirect, lets you move the start date at no charge before it begins. See [changing the start date](/super-visa-insurance/).
Can I change the start date after buying?
Yes, before the policy starts, at no charge, on the TuGo plan sold on SuperVisaDirect. Email us the new arrival date and we move it with TuGo. After the start date, changes are limited and may need proof the parent had not yet entered Canada. The date-change rules are on our [super visa insurance page](/super-visa-insurance/).
What does my parent show at the port of entry?
The printed insurance certificate or proof letter, the letter of introduction from IRCC, the passport and the host's invitation. CBSA officers can ask for the insurance and can refuse entry without it. Keep a PDF on the parent's phone and a paper copy. Our [port of entry page](/super-visa-insurance/port-of-entry/) has the checklist.
Does coverage start on the policy date or when my parent lands?
On the policy start date, which should be the arrival date. IRCC requires the policy to be valid for at least one year from the date of entry, and on each entry. If the parent arrives after the start date, the first days are wasted and the year may end early. Align the dates; see [start date](/super-visa-insurance/).
What if my parent arrives, leaves and comes back?
The super visa allows multiple entries, and IRCC requires valid insurance on each entry. Most plans suspend coverage while the parent is outside Canada; Allianz pauses coverage during home-country trips, and side trips must keep 51% of time in Canada. Tell us about trips before they happen. See [side trips and trips home](/super-visa-insurance/side-trips/).
Does Ontario have an OHIP waiting period for super visa parents?
Super visa holders are visitors and are not eligible for OHIP at all. Ontario removed its three-month OHIP waiting period in 2025, but that applies to eligible residents, not visitors. British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces keep waits of up to three months. See our [claims page](/super-visa-insurance/claims/).
How do I renew super visa insurance after one year?
Buy a new policy before the current one ends, while the parent is in Canada. Most insurers allow renewal without a gap if you apply before expiry, and the stability period is reassessed at the new start date. We email you 60 days ahead with the TuGo renewal price at the parent's new age band and the stability period that then applies. See [renewals](/super-visa-insurance/renewals/).
What is the maximum age for super visa insurance?
It varies: TuGo Comprehensive and 21st Century Basic have no maximum; Secure Travel goes to 90, Allianz and MSH to 89, Manulife, Travelance and 21st Century Enhanced to 85, GMS to 79. Pre-existing cover often ends earlier, for example Destination excludes it from 80. Compare on our [2026 comparison](/super-visa-insurance/compare-2026/).
How do we make a claim?
Call the 24-hour assistance number on the wallet card before treatment where possible; it is a condition of most policies. Keep every receipt and report. We help assemble the file and follow up. TuGo has drawn complaints about 10-week claim waits, so expect delays. Steps on our [claims page](/super-visa-insurance/claims/).
What does repatriation cover, and is it capped?
Repatriation pays to return the parent home for treatment or, on death, to return remains. IRCC requires it. Most plans include it within the coverage amount, but GMS caps repatriation at $5,000, which may not cover a medical flight to India. Check the cap on the [comparison](/super-visa-insurance/compare-2026/) before buying.
Do I get an IRCC proof letter and when?
Yes. Every policy bought on SuperVisaDirect comes with TuGo's certificate, an IRCC proof-of-insurance letter and a wallet card by email. The TuGo plan is instant-issue, so the documents arrive within minutes of payment at any hour. The letter is uploaded with the application and shown at the border. See [how it works](/how-it-works/).
